Recently, I took a much-needed self-care day. It wasn’t just about relaxation, though that was a plus for me. It was about intentionally carving out space to nurture my mind, body, and spirit.
Stepping back from the daily hustle allowed me to focus on what truly makes me feel good. I check in with myself throughout the day, prioritizing activities that reduce stress and foster a sense of well-being. That sounds like I’m on the right track, but are you?
Instead of rushing through the morning or weekend, there are different self-care activities you can do, like enjoying a long breakfast with a book. Pamper yourself with a relaxing bath and indulge in activities that bring you joy, whether reading, in nature, or simply napping.
A self-care day for me wasn’t just a quick moment of satisfaction. It is much needed and essential. By replenishing my well, I’m better equipped to handle life’s challenges and show up fully for the people and things that matter most.
What is self-care?
Self-care is actively prioritizing your well-being and happiness, even in challenging circumstances. It involves physical, mental, emotional, educational, and spiritual. It’s about intentionally engaging in activities that promote self-care, reduce stress, and improve your mood afterward.
Before I go any further, there is a slightly blurred understanding of self-care. It can be anything that benefits you positively.
The main thought that comes to mind regarding self-care is images of bubble baths and face masks. Though this is nice, it is better classed as self-soothing. Self-care doesn’t always have to be ‘pretty’ or ‘aesthetic.’ It is what you can do to take care of yourself in all aspects, whether mentally, physically, financially, or anything in between!
Taking a self-care weekend is like hitting a reset button for your mind and body. It could sound like a typical weekend, but it can help put you in the right frame for the week ahead. You’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle anything the next week throws at you, and you might even find yourself making better progress on your projects. Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s the best thing you can do to be your best self!
Are you ready to plan that self-care weekend?
Here are some planning tips you can adopt to have the best self-care day or weekend.
Set a goal. Identify what you want to get out of the weekend. Is it rest, relaxation, self-love, or goal progress? Plan activities that will help you achieve that goal.
Choose the right time. Pick a weekend with minimal obligations and deadlines to relax fully. Avoid weekends with family events or work pressures.
Plan your activities: Brainstorm what self-care activities would be most enjoyable for you. These could include reading, bathing, or pursuing a hobby.
Communicate your plans. Let those around you know you’re taking a self-care weekend to avoid interruptions and ensure you can truly recharge.
Create a calming environment. Tidy up, light candles, use essential oils and play calming music to set a relaxing mood.
Be mindful. Focus on the present moment and savor each activity you choose.
Prioritize rest: Get enough sleep and take naps if needed to recharge.
Learn and adjust. Reflect on what has worked and what didn’t to improve your future self-care weekends.
Reflect and be grateful. Take time to appreciate the experience and what you’re thankful for.
Connect with loved ones. Spend quality time with people who bring you joy, but only if it enhances your self-care.
