Have you sat down and wondered why your skincare products aren’t working, even though you’re doing everything right? Or are you having skin issues? You have to stop doing some things to your skin, especially your face. Interestingly, the damage to our skin is often our own doing, knowingly or unknowingly.

7 Things You Need to Stop Doing to Your Skin
1. Sleeping in your make-up
Makeup can clog pores and oil glands. I know you’ve heard this before, but I need to emphasize it: sleeping with your make-up on is not good. It’s understandable if it happens once in a blue moon, but when it happens frequently, that’s when there’s a problem. No matter how late it gets, try washing off before you sleep; make it a part of your bedtime skincare routine.
2. Find the homemade scrub/masks that suit your skin type
Even though the ingredients you need to make face scrubs or masks are in your kitchen, that doesn’t mean you should use every scrub/mask. Find the one that suits your skin type.
3. Popping pimples
It is TEMPTING that the first sight of a pimple makes you want to pop it right out. When you pop or squeeze a pimple, you might get away with it temporarily, but guess what! It can get worse. Studies show that popping pimples isn’t good for your skin because it causes blemishes and leaves scars.

I know the feeling. I hardly have pimples, but when I do, it’s hard to fight the temptation to touch them. Yes, I know (guilty as charged). If you pop or squeeze a pimple that isn’t ready to pop, it could make it look worse. So, if you feel the urge to pop a pimple, wait for it to ripen (white or yellow head pimple). If not, LEAVE IT ALONE.
4. Over-cleansing
When you over-cleanse, you deprive your skin of its natural state. Cleansing removes excess oil and dirt and unclogs pores. If you wash your face every night or twice a day, don’t over-cleanse. CLEANSE IN MODERATION and avoid using harsh cleansers, as you’re aware that too much of everything is not good.
5. Using dirty make-up sponges or brushes
When you use the same brush or sponge to apply your make-up, it accumulates so much make-up that it starts attracting dirt and bacteria. If you keep using it unwashed, it could irritate your skin and cause breakouts. One way to avoid skin problems is to start washing your make-up brushes and sponges; thank you.
6. Over-exfoliating
Exfoliating is part of our skincare routine, but it can irritate skin if you don’t do it gently. Be gentle, whether you have regular, oily, dry, or sensitive skin. You might want to consider exfoliating with your fingers instead of using a brush all the time. Signs you’re over-exfoliating include breakouts, burning, redness, and rashes. If you notice any of these signs, stop and let your skin heal.
7. Combining too many products
So many products exist, from moisturizers to serums, face masks, and cleansers. Every time you hear about a new product on the market, you might think, “It could work for my skin.” Yes, these products can benefit your skin, but their ingredients might not all work together. Trying new skincare products isn’t harmful, but you have to be careful when combining too many. Before you start buying or using all these skincare products, ask yourself these questions:
- Do I need these skincare products?
- How many skincare products should I use?
- Am I allergic to any of the ingredients used in making this product?
What do you say?
What things do you do to your skin? Are you going to stop doing them?

Thanks, Temi. We are all guilty; it’s just trying to get ourselves to stop doing them.
Thanks, Sonia.
Yes, we all want to try new products. It’s being careful about using everything.
